Panning with a point-n-shoot

I learned about panning from AhMak's brother. He is a photo enthusiast that believes that good photos alone can tell a story. Well, my photo can tell a story too IF I am sitting together with people who are looking through my photo because then, I'll be the story teller while the people flip through my photo :S

I have seen his photos before and after listening to some of his theories, I very much agree with him. A good photo can tell a story without the photographer narrating what happened in the photo at the time it was captured. I have tried but I think I failed miserably.

Anyway, back to panning. I was able to try it out during the Moto GP at Sepang. The bikes zoomed by so fast that it seems impossible to capture them. This is how the rider looks like when I click on the shutter button when they pass:

Because the bike is so fast, it ends up blur but the background is clear

I tried a few more shots but they are all the same. At last I remembered how AhMak's bro explained about panning. This technique is how photographers create photo of moving objects with a blur background but the subject is clear. It gives an effect to make the subject in movement.

Panning is when you focus on that subject, lock the focus and follow the movement of the subject (with your camera) and then snap! the photo. And here's a very very amateur photo I got with a point-n-shoot:

I am using Sony Cybershot DSC-N1

I know it might not be a very successful try because the subject is too far away but at least I got a clear motor and a blur background. Still lack of a DSLR camera for more experiments... :`(

  • There's a delay in shooting for P&S and it doesn't help with panning as you wouldn't know when exactly will the camera shoot.

DSLR is the way to go, hehe
