Walking with The Star

This year I participated in the Penang Starwalk again after missing the event last year.

I did not pay too much attention to Starwalk from registration to T-shirt collection to actual event day. I registered just a few days before the closing date, I collect my T-shirt on the last day (3rd day) of collection and I did not do any exercises 2 weeks prior to the walk.

  • I collected my T-shirt so late because I had lunch appointment with my small boss on the first day, and on the 2nd collection day, I totally forgotten about it until after lunch hour (coz I was worried about sth else that day). When I collect the goody bag and shirt on the 3rd day, only L and XL size T-shirt is available :(
  • No exercise activities 2 weeks before the event because I was sick for one and a half week, and I was very busy with work for the other half week.
I'm not too worried about it because it is just a 10km walk. Should not be too difficult to complete. There are 2 categories: competition (RM12) and non-competition (RM8). I participated in the competition category. I like to compete, they give me more reasons to push harder.

I have learnt from a commenter in my previous entry on Starwalk 2006 (only support IE browser) that I may have won a placing in my category based on my finishing time of 80mins last time. I'm not sure myself as I did not check the scoreboard for my name (it never occur to me that I can get a placing). Seeing that I may have a chance, before the race this morning, I told myself that I'll try my best and push harder this time around.

This morning, I was there early reaching PISA at about 6.15am. There were still plenty of parking spaces available. I had my whole family with me, it is so much fun than being alone :)

The walk started a few mins past 7am, I'd say it is quite punctual. With the goal of completing 10km in 80mins or less, I started the walk. My sis was trailing behind me but I lost track of her not long after that, mum and dad is no where to be seen. But when I reach snake temple, I caught sight of my mum catching up. She had ditched my dad and increased her pace...poor dad had to walk alone...haha

There are marshalls placed along the route to catch people who are running (it is StarWALK), but it is not possible to catch all of them. Some people are smart, when they see marshalls around they'll slow to a walk. As soon as they passed him, they'll start running again...geram-lah!

Finally, after a long and tiring walk, I crossed the finishing line in 1hr 18mins 25sec. With this time, I managed to get 28th placing in Women Open category. Only 1st to 3rd placing got cash, 4th to 35th placing gets medal but no cash. Cash or no cash, I am proud of myself :D

As for my mum, she got a placing in Women Senior Veteran category too. Her name was being called out for the 11th placing, but when we go to the counter to collect our medal, the person said for her category, medal is only given out until the 10th placing. He said it was a mistake that they have announced winners until 15th placing just now. Ohhh...my mum was really disappointed. It would not have been so bad if they have not read out her name in the first place. "Yat cheong fun hei yat cheong hung"

We sit in the PISA stadium for almost 4hrs waiting for the lucky draw. There are many interesting prizes to be given out. First there are 100prizes comprising of printers, handphone, GPS and hampers. Then there are air tickets from Firefly, AirAsia, MAS, EVA Air and China Airlines.

Starting with Firefly, then AirAsia. Both low-cost airlines give out more than 5 return air tickets to domestic and oversea destinations. After hearing so many different destinations given out, it was MAS turn. The first destination given out was...jeng jeng jeng...Penang-Kuala Lumpur-Penang. Everyone in the stadium boo-ed after the MC announce that out. What a disappointment, being a national airline with such expensive fares, MAS is giving out Penang-KL-Penang flight ticket. MAS only give out 2 tickets, the next ticket is Penang-HK-Penang. This is more like it, people in the stadium clap and cheer to this. At least the second destination kind of redeem back the embarrassment for the first one. Then there is the 25 Panasonic prizes: rice cooker, cordless phone, vacumm cleaner, camcorder, camera, microwave oven, 32" LCD TV and the biggest prize of all, 37" LCD TV. Last but not least, the 5 grand prize motorcycle sponsored by Suzuki.

Unfortunately, after such a long wait and so many prizes given out, we still go home empty handed (plus an empty stomach). No such luck...
