Something to ponder

Harvey Norman is doing another round of sale lately, I think they call it the branded sale or sth. The branded items on sale were displayed outside of their store, at ground level (their store was at level2). Items on display were bedsheets, bed and LazyBoy chair (one of my wishlist item). Something caught my eye when I walk past the beds, and I went closer to check.

The King size bed, which is called by the name 7th Heaven cost RM17,000++. Can you believe it? A bed that cost RM17k?! There's no 'DO NOT SIT' sign, so I quickly jump onto bed to test how 7th Heaven feels. No la, not jump, I'm juz exaggerating. I sit politely onto the bed actually :)

Behind 7th Heaven is another set of King size bed. This is black in color, both the bed and it's frame. And it is named Zen Bed Set. My eye balls nearly fall out when I saw the price. The display price was RM33,000++!! But there was a 90% discount, which means the selling price would be around RM3,300+. Still expensive leh~

First thought that came to mind was, "are there going to be people buying these stuff? those that buy such expensive bed must be out of their mind". But after thinking over it, i don't think buying an expensive bed is crazy after all. Think of it this way: Is it worth the money to buy a set of bed at RM17k? Or do you think it better to take the RM17k as down payment for your new car?

For me, if I have RM17k, I would choose the RM17k bed. And here's the reason why:
  1. Considering the time you spend on the bed vs the time you spend in the car. I spend 7hrs sleeping but only 30mins driving to and from work daily (15mins one way). If I drive back hometown during weekend, then there will be 2hrs extra time spent in the car but still incomparable to time spend in bed.
  2. Maintenance fee. No extra money needed after you have the bed in the room. Maybe once in a while there's a need to wash and change the bed sheet, or maybe during Chinese New Year you want to buy a new set of bed sheet to change feng shui. But that's all to a bed. Compare this with a car. Every week have to feed it with petrol, every 5,000km need to change engine oil, every 10,000km new oil filter, every few months have to change new pair of wiper and many many other maintenance fee needed. Then there's car insurance and road tax. In addition to that, any slight accident on the road would means more spending.
  3. Security and safety of the items bought. If one day, you're a target of thief (choi choi, touch wood), no matter what kind of high tech car alarm you install, bad guys still be able to get to your car. Either taking away the whole car or only car audio system or just break your window to get to your bag, there'll be a lost of money somehow. This would be different with the 7th Heaven bed. If the thief broke into the house, what would he have done to your bed? The most he can do is to lie down a few mins to enjoy the feeling of 7th Heaven, no harm done :) I'm sure no thief will be so stupid as to steal your King size bed.
  4. Total cost. Bed cost RM17k, car cost RM170k.
  5. Er...i think that's all the main points I can think of. And having these 4 points is enough to support my opinion that a RM17k bed is more worth the money compare to a car.
So, who got RM17k and plan to buy a car, maybe you should re-consider your choice.
